One of the “Unnatural Talent” rules for developing a webcomic is consistency – never, ever skip a post, never, ever be late.

But sometimes life gets in the way.

I’ve mentioned before that one of the non-cartoonist things I am is a preacher; specifically a Commissioned Ruling Elder in the Presbytery of Sheppherds and Lapsley of the PC(USA). It’s a mouthful of words that work out to me being a part-time lay preacher.

I serve a small church on Birmingham’s west side – the only PC(USA) church on that side of town. Most members are related to one another, we usually have fewer than twelve people in a worship service, and instead of a pianist we have a guitarist. I won’t lie to you, I absolutely love every moment I get to spend there. It is every kind of awesome you could imagine.

A couple of weeks ago, one of our members passed away. Evelyn was one of the elders, and was in charge of (among other things) making sure we had a worship service bulletin every week. That’s no small bit of effort, mind you: we Presbyterians like responsive readings, unison confessions, and Lectionary readings, and there are new ones every week.Bigger churches have paid staff to do that stuff, but Evelyn did it for free, even when it meant she had to do it by hand when her computer broke.

So I spent the week working on my part of the funeral service. It shouldn’t have taken as long as it did, and I should have had the foresight to work up an Off-Week Update during the downtime on my night shift job, but I didn’t. And when we got through with the funeral and fellowship yesterday, I’d been awake, fueled by cough medicine and coffee, for well over 24 hours.

So, yeah, I blew it, and I’m sorry.

I will be on time with the cartoon. It might be a total piece of crap (as opposed to all the other pieces of crap, you say), but it’ll post next Friday.

Thanks for being part of this journey.

And just so you can spend some time laughing at me, here’s a video on Tim’s channel of me singing.
